Shutterspeed Duo's All-American Futurity Trials is a collaborative project by Ford Fourqurean (clarinets/electronics) and Erich Barganier (electric guitar/electronics) that brings both musicians' finely tuned sensibilities to an immersive electro-acoustic environment. At many moments on the recording, one can hear sonic soundscapes that would be at home in the experimental corners of commercial electronic and ambient music; what makes Shutterspeed's efforts unique is the sensitivity to pacing, structure, and contrast that they bring to these pieces. Both musicians show their range throughout -- Bargainer brings an expansive approach to sound sculpting on the guitar and Fourqurean ventures from visceral growls to plaintive long tones. What marks the collection is their discipline as composer/performers, creating a context with clear stylistic boundaries and then inhabiting and enhancing those frames both with their compositional and performance decisions.

– Dan Lippel

Erich Barganier (electric guitar/electronics) and Ford Fourqurean (clarinets/electronics) are Shutterspeed Duo, a composer/performer ensemble combining contemporary classical composition, DIY aesthetics, multimedia electronics, and video art. The group released their debut EP Iris in February 2021 and has since created and performed a new hybrid repertoire of clarinet, guitar, synths, and electronics across the United States and Europe, pushing the genre of indie-classical to new realms. They have performed nationally and internationally at Bang on a Can Summer Music Institute and ClarinetFest in Reno, Denver, and Dublin, as well as regularly performing at home in New York.

After receiving an Ensemble Forward grant in 2024 from Chamber Music America, the duo spent a year working with Todd Reynolds (ETHEL, The Books) refining fresh material that would find its way onto the group’s premiere LP, titled All-American Futurity Trials. Barganier and Fourqurean entered Figure 8 Recording in October 2024 to lay tracks under the guidance of GRAMMY-winning composer and New Amsterdam Records co-founder Bill Brittelle. The record straddles ambient electronica and Western art music, drawing eclectic inspiration from artists like Ryoji Ikeda, Harold Budd, Brian Eno, Pharoah Sanders, La Monte Young, James Tenney, and Floating Points. Glitch electronics, minimalist classical music, vintage synthesizers, and more paint a futuristic vision of the United States, inspired by rapidly-evolving natural landscapes, the prevalence of pharmaceutical advertising shaping American culture, and liminal environmental spaces. The album was mixed by Scott Hirsch (Hiss Golden Messenger, The Court & Spark) at Echo Magic.
